One would have thought that the all the intersections with the R44 in this part of Stellenbosch – Dorp street, Adam Tas road, Alexander street , up to Merriman street would have been dealt with in a comprehensive, holistic plan.
Why only this intersection, in one of the most historic streets in Stellenbosch?
Widening the R44 is going to harm the historical and rural character of Stellenbosch and one has to question Heritage Western Cape’s judgement in this matter.
Stellenbosch has become a HQ for big businesses, which, instead of locating their administrative offices in the Cape Metro are building head offices in Stellenbosch, thus ruining the historical and rural character of Stellenbosch. The traffic caused by Capitec, BAT and Mediclinic personnel is a major contributor to congestion in and around our town. One would have thought that people who grew up here would be more sensitive and show more respect to our heritage and environment.
